The program
consists of 3 semesters (1.5 years) full-time coursework, and a one
semester thesis. One semester corresponds to 30 credit units.
The program starts with
three compulsory courses covering the fundamentals of digital and
radio communications. Following these courses the students can
specialize their studies in one of the profiles
Information
Transmission and Processing
Wireless Communication and Networks
Each profile is defined by a number of compulsory and a number of
elective courses. Additionally, the student may take a few courses
(see below) on management, organization or law and count these towards
the degree.
Requirements for Graduation
The student must take at least 90 credit units from Tables 1-2 in
the course list (see below).
The courses marked as mandatory in the tables must be
included in the degree.
The requirements for at least one profile must be satisfied.
At least 6 credits must be taken from Table 2. At most 12
credits from Table 2 can
be counted towards the degree.
The student must successfully complete a M.Sc. thesis project of
30 credits.
Thesis project The Master's Thesis project takes place
during the second year. Typically, the preceding summer is used to
prepare for and specify the thesis project. The thesis project is
carried out in the area defined by the courses taken during the first
year of the program. To be eligible to commence the thesis project
the student must have taken a minimum of 60 credits from the course list.
The project can be performed either in industry, at a KTH
department, or in another technical university or research institute.
It is the responsibility of the student to find a thesis
project.
The requirements on the M.Sc. thesis is the same as
for students in the Swedish EE engineering program. All projects must
be approved by a KTH examiner (faculty). The students must (among
other things) (1) write a project report, approved by the KTH
examiner, (2) give an oral presentation, (3) act as opponent on
another student's presentation. More precise information on these
requirements, along with examples of thesis projects, can be found
here: Information
on M.Sc. thesis projects.
List of courses
The academic year at KTH is divided into four quarters: Q1-Q2 in September-December and Q3-Q4 in January-June.
In some cases, a course can give a variable number of credits units (cr.u.). The
numbers listed in the tables are then the maximum number of
credits which can be counted towards the degree for a given course. Note that only courses that have been completed fully can be accounted in the degree.
Table 1: Core courses
I: compulsory for the Information Processing and Transmission profile
W: compulsory for the Wireless Communications and Networks profile
Compulsory courses should be taken during the first year.
A presentation of the curriculum with some more details is available here (PDF file)
A few of the course webpages are currently in Swedish. These courses will be taught in English
starting 2007/08. English versions of the webpages are coming soon.
Some courses are offered only biannually and thus may be taken either during the first or the second year of the program. Please check the corresponding course website
for more information.
Students interested in taking courses which are not listed in the above tables may
do so after obtaining permission from the corresponding course director. However, only
courses in the above tables may be counted towards the degree.
This list is preliminary - Changes in the curriculum may occur.
